Despite floods in Libya showing the urgency of the climate crisis, 2023’s United Nations General Assembly has been quiet on climate change.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wave of net zero pledges has crested and the next big UN deadline for nearer-term climate plans is not until 2025.<\/p>\n

UN chief Antonio Guterres’ Climate Action Summit, for all his fiery rhetoric on ending fossil fuel addiction, was more notable for the absentees<\/a> than groundbreaking commitments.<\/p>\n

But there were a handful of announcements in New York. Here’s five you need to know about.<\/p>\n

1. Brazil ups climate target<\/h3>\n

Brazil’s new environment minister Marina Silva announced that the country would scrap the weakened climate targets set by the last president Jair Bolsonaro and set more ambitious ones.<\/p>\n

To applause, she said the country would update its climate plan so that it cuts emissions on 2005 levels by 37-48% by 2025 and 50-53% by 2030.<\/p>\n

“This despite the fact that our historical responsibilities being incomparably smaller than those of the rich countries,” said Silva<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If the baseline is the same, that’s an increase in ambition on Brazil’s 2015 climate plan, which only promised<\/a> a cut of 43% by 2030.<\/p>\n

2. Colombia commits against coal<\/h3>\n

Colombia and Panama have joined a coalition of governments committed to phasing out coal power.<\/p>\n

Colombia’s decision to join the\u00a0 Powering Past Coal alliance is noteworthy given the South American nation is the sixth-largest<\/a> coal exporter in the world.<\/p>\n

“As coal power is on the way to becoming a thing of the past, we are working to reduce the economy’s reliance on coal,” Colombia minister of mines and energy Omar Andres Camacho said.<\/p>\n

The alliance commits<\/a> countries to stop building unabated coal power stations and to phase out the ones they have. It doesn’t say anything about ending coal mining or exporting though.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0France flops on GCF funding<\/h3>\n

Despite co-leading<\/a> a push to make the global financial system work for the climate and developing world, France announced just a 4% increase in its funding for the Green Climate Fund.<\/p>\n

With other nations like the UK announcing less than 10% increases, the fund may have to curb its ambitions<\/a> at the expense of people in the developing world.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the fund hosting a pledging conference next month, there was a spate of pledges<\/a> from smaller nations like Spain, Luxembourg and Iceland.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the GCF’s new boss Mafalda Duarte set out her vision for reform<\/a> of the UN’s flagship climate fund.<\/p>\n

4. Denmark dishes climate cash<\/h3>\n

The Danish government is increasing<\/a> the capital of its development finance institution, which will allow it to spend more tackling climate change in the developing world.<\/p>\n

Currently, the Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU) allocates \u20ac268m ($285m) a year to climate finance. By 2030, the government wants to increase this to \u20ac670-940m ($712-1,000m) a year.<\/p>\n

The increase in capital is funded by more money from the government and through access to the government’s re-lending scheme.<\/p>\n

5. Corporate push against fossils<\/h3>\n

A group of major corporations is not waiting for multilateral consensus to phase out fossil fuels and shift to clean energy.<\/p>\n

The We Mean Business Coalition has launched a new campaign<\/a>, which demands immediate action from businesses and governments and offers guiding principles to end reliance on coal, oil and gas.<\/p>\n

An accompanying poll conducted by the coalition found that nearly half of business leaders surveyed expect to phase out fossil fuels from their companies by
