{"id":47946,"date":"2023-01-25T17:49:53","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T17:49:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=47946"},"modified":"2023-01-26T10:02:55","modified_gmt":"2023-01-26T10:02:55","slug":"despite-killer-floods-nigerian-presidential-frontrunners-dismiss-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2023\/01\/25\/despite-killer-floods-nigerian-presidential-frontrunners-dismiss-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Despite killer floods, Nigerian presidential frontrunners dismiss climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Last year, flooding across Nigeria killed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.munichre.com\/content\/dam\/munichre\/mrwebsitespressreleases\/natcat_stats_2022_factsheet.pdf\/_jcr_content\/renditions\/original.\/natcat_stats_2022_factsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 600<\/a> people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although climate change made this event <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatherattribution.org\/climate-change-exacerbated-heavy-rainfall-leading-to-large-scale-flooding-in-highly-vulnerable-communities-in-west-africa\/\">more likely<\/a>, the country&#8217;s leading presidential candidates have so far failed to take the issue seriously on the campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A month away from general elections, Nigerian climate expert professor Chukwumerije Okereke told Climate Home that, in spite of the extreme floods last year, climate change was still not a decisive issue in the country&#8217;s elections. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The leading candidate in the latest polls,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/manifesto.obidatticampaign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Obi,<\/a> has dismissed the importance of addressing the climate crisis, while the second place, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bolatinubu.com\/manifesto\/renewed_hope-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bola Tinubu<\/a>, has supported coal expansion. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atiku.org\/_files\/ugd\/eef005_bed2250281af40468ebcb427c0db7ec0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atiku Abubakar<\/a> is polling in third place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okereke said that Obi was the only one to even visit flood victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Obi plays it down<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Twitter, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peterobi\/status\/1572575767476969473\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obi said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the floods were \u201clinked [to] climate change which is real\u201d. In person though, he has dismissed climate change\u2019s importance.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">even in other parts of the nation, and help them sail through the turbulent times. I also call on the relevant authorities to intensify efforts to mitigate loses and casualties resulting from natural disasters.These unprecedented flooding are linked climate change, which is real.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Peter Obi (@PeterObi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeterObi\/status\/1572575767476969473?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 21, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asked about the issue on a trip to the US in September, Peter Obi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=62ePU-selWQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> his government \u201cwill consider it in whatever we are doing but, quite frankly, I\u2019m going to be aggressive in other areas\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t be talking about climate change when people are taking cover from bombs,\u201d he said. \u201cI might be wrong\u201d, he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a reference to a bombing campaign by Islamist group Boko Haram in the north of Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2023\/01\/23\/woodmac-wins-the-consultancy-giving-cover-to-fossil-fuel-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WoodMac wins<\/strong>: The consultancy giving cover to fossil fuel projects<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/778288\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the African conflict and peacebuilding review found in 2020 that climate change and environmental degradation has helped Boko Haram recruit and gain support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Benjamin Pohl, a researcher from the Adelphi think tank, said that conflict is \u201cmaking adaptation harder just while climate change is already undermining livelihoods\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth conflict and climate change impacts have huge consequences for human security, so people want and deserve protection against both,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Bola Tinubu promotes coal<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another leading candidate is former Lagos state governor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bolatinubu.com\/manifesto\/renewed_hope-2023.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bola Tinubu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from current president Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s party. He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisdaylive.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/12\/at-enugu-tinubu-pledges-to-restore-coal-mining-revive-economy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has promised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to revive an abandoned coal mining project in Enugu state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meeting with voters in northern Nigeria, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecable.ng\/tinubus-faulty-knowledge-of-climate-change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinubu said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that unless developed countries deliver climate finance \u201cwe are not going to comply with your climate change\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/tinubus-church-rat-and-climate-communion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">described<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> climate change as \u201ca question of how do you prevent a church rat from eating a poisoned holy communion\u201d. In this metaphor, Nigeria is the rat and the developed countries are those that are poisoning it.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2023\/01\/18\/mexico-plans-to-ban-solar-geoengineering-after-rogue-experiment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mexico plans<\/strong> to ban solar geoengineering after rogue experiment<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developed countries, which are disproportionately responsible for climate change, have <a href=\"https:\/\/climatechangenews.com\/2021\/10\/25\/donor-countries-set-reach-100bn-climate-finance-target-2023-three-years-late\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failed<\/a> to deliver the level of climate finance they promised. But developing countries like Nigeria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2022\/12\/08\/which-countries-are-particularly-vulnerable-to-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">face the worst<\/a> of its impacts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Okereke, Tinubu failed to understand that \u201cif the West fails to pay up, Nigeria and other African countries will still be the ones that suffer the worst impacts of climate change\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third leading candidate Atiku Abubakar has not been questioned on the issue in public. But his campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelstv.com\/2022\/09\/12\/climate-change-is-real-we-all-must-wake-up-atiku\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said on Facebook<\/a> that \u201cclimate change is real\u201d and that last year\u2019s flooding <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirms this<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Manifesto promises<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three candidates\u2019 manifestos promise <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to reduce environmental pollution in the oil and gas producing Niger Delta region, address the burning off of gas as a waste product by oil companies and transition from fossil fuels to renewables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But environmental campaigner Michael Terungwa told Climate Home that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their manifesto promises are vague and their answers on the campaign trail suggest climate change is not a priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47947\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47947\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47947\" src=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2023\/01\/image_6483441.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2023\/01\/25170108\/image_6483441.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2023\/01\/25170108\/image_6483441-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2023\/01\/25170108\/image_6483441-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2023\/01\/25170108\/image_6483441-112x63.jpg 112w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2023\/01\/25170108\/image_6483441-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Environmental campaigners protest in Abuja ahead of the election (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/miketerungwa\/status\/1616327407195013121?s=46&amp;t=RK4GJ5_OrcOwV8j6gmbtCQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo: Mike Terungwa<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polling carried out before the floods <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrobarometer.org\/publication\/nigeria-climate-change-scorecard\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that two-thirds of Nigerians have not heard of climate change. No polling has been carried out since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some voters at least though, the issue has since risen up their list of priorities. Ken Eduzor\u2019s home near the river Niger was one of those hit by floods, leaving his family homeless for weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis has made us realise that we must elect leaders who have plans to tackle flooding and other environmental issues as the election is drawing closer. It\u2019s now about voting leaders who understand how to address climate issues,\u201d he told Climate Home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To be elected in the first round, the winning candidate must receive over 25% of the vote in at least 24 of the 36 states. Obi is currently polling at 23% of the vote, the Premium Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/571717-again-poll-projects-peter-obi-to-win-2023-election.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first round will take place on February
