{"id":47286,"date":"2022-10-06T10:52:27","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T09:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=47286"},"modified":"2022-10-06T10:52:27","modified_gmt":"2022-10-06T09:52:27","slug":"ugandan-police-brutally-arrest-anti-pipeline-protesters-outside-eu-embassy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2022\/10\/06\/ugandan-police-brutally-arrest-anti-pipeline-protesters-outside-eu-embassy\/","title":{"rendered":"Ugandan police &#8216;brutally arrest&#8217; anti-pipeline protesters outside EU embassy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ugandan police have been accused of brutality towards students protesting against Total Energies&#8217; East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (Eacop).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About 50 protesters delivered a petition to the European Union&#8217;s embassy in Uganda&#8217;s capital Kampala yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Protester Nabuyanda John Solomon told Climate Home they were attacked by police officers who &#8220;brutally arrested&#8221; nine, broke one man&#8217;s arm and hit another&#8217;s eye with a baton.<\/p>\n<p>The arrested protesters are being held in the maximum security Luzira prison until they appear in court on Monday, charged with &#8220;common nuisance&#8221;, Solomon said.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union has called for the demonstrators&#8217; release. In a tweet, its embassy said it &#8220;values democratic debates&#8221; and has received petitions from Ugandans who both support and oppose the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>On 15 September, the European Parliament passed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/RC-9-2022-0409_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency resolution<\/a> condemning human rights violations and environmental damage associated with fossil fuel projects in Uganda and Tanzania.<\/p>\n<p>Police did not intervene in a student demonstration last week defending oil development against this resolution, the Stop Eacop campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopeacop.net\/our-news\/petition-for-release-of-9-students-protesting-against-eacop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claims<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">EU is a strong believer of freedom of expression &amp; demonstration &amp; values democratic debates. We call on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PoliceUg?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PoliceUg<\/a> to release students arrested today as they demonstrated in front of our &#x1f1ea;&#x1f1fa; office <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YbdO2Y3YdM\">pic.twitter.com\/YbdO2Y3YdM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 EU in Uganda (@EUinUG) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EUinUG\/status\/1577300095837544448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 4, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Solomon said that the European Union embassy&#8217;s head of cooperation Caroline Adriaensen told security guards to open the gates and let him and fellow protester Liz Nyanzi in to deliver their petition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The others that remained outside immediately were arrested,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;They are killing me&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Footage captured by NTV Uganda shows Solomon in a green, yellow and black shirt speaking to the press and then protesters fleeing when threatened with arrest.<\/p>\n<p>One of those caught by the police shouts &#8220;they are killing me&#8221; and screams as officers restrain him.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8Z161P5SQyE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Solomon said that this was the first protest against Eacop in East Africa as campaigners face intimidation and fear arrests.<\/p>\n<p>Eacop is a proposed 1,433 km oil pipeline to take 230,000 barrels of oil a day from oil fields in Uganda to the Tanzanian coast for export.<\/p>\n<p>French company Total Energies and the China National Offshore Oil Corporation are leading on the project, supported by the Ugandan and Tanzanian governments.<\/p>\n<p>Solomon said he opposed Eacop because of the risks it poses to Uganda&#8217;s forests and rivers and because the project is secretive, will displace thousands of people and mainly benefit foreign companies.<\/p>\n<p>The pipeline route runs through a number of sensitive ecosystems and wetlands of designated international importance.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/climatechangenews.com\/2022\/10\/05\/world-leaders-not-invited-to-attend-critical-un-biodiversity-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>World leaders<\/strong> not invited to attend critical UN biodiversity summit<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because of its low sulphur content, the oil transported by the pipeline will require heating above 50C to flow.<\/p>\n<p>When burned, the oil will emit 33 million tonnes of CO2 a year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.banktrack.org\/download\/crude_risk\/cruderisk_eacop_briefing_nov2020_1.pdf\">NGOs\u2019 calculations<\/a>. That&#8217;s equivalent to the national emissions of <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/EN.ATM.GHGT.KT.CE?most_recent_value_desc=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zimbabwe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Onyango, a spokesperson from Kampala Metropolitan Police told NTV Uganda: &#8220;The protesters did not seek police clearance to demonstrate. We had to adjourn their illegal demonstration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Uganda&#8217;s constitutional court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2020\/03\/uganda-constitutional-court-nullifies-law-used-to-prohibit-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nullified a law<\/a> that gave police sweeping powers to break up protests. Amnesty International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2022\/06\/uganda-authorities-must-stop-criminalizing-activists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> the authorities continue to criminalise activists with no legal basis.<\/p>\n<p>Total Energies did not reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Nine activists are in detention after delivering a petition against Total Energies&#8217;
