They warned that the cost of aviation fuel was rising and therefore they must &#8220;regrettably&#8221; discontinue operations indefinitely from Monday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Sigh. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jeVIWttHEU\">pic.twitter.com\/jeVIWttHEU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mo-Mo&#x1f499; (@Morris_Monye) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Morris_Monye\/status\/1522655126485352448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 6, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>After air passengers scrambled to rebook flights before the shutdown, the AON announced on Monday that their strike was cancelled after the government agreed to talks.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, the government agreed to subsidise aviation fuel, ensuring it costs no more than N480 ($1.15) a litre for three months. In Nigeria in 2021, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/nigerianstat.gov.ng\/elibrary\/read\/1241160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13 million domestic passengers<\/a>, many of them the same individuals counted more than once, in a nation of 206 million.<\/p>\n<p>Most Nigerians rely on road and rail to get around the country, which is cleaner but less convenient. Roads are <a href=\"https:\/\/climatehomenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6316d25f7b68919349e54a251&amp;id=4d6a25022a&amp;e=41888a8132\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">often unpaved<\/a> and both roads and the rail can be dangerous. Last month, a train carrying 362 passengers <a href=\"https:\/\/climatehomenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6316d25f7b68919349e54a251&amp;id=93a42689c9&amp;e=41888a8132\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was bombed<\/a> and most of the passengers were killed or kidnapped.<\/p>\n<p>On social media, critics expressed fears the subsidy would become permanent. &#8220;Another subsidy scam. Three months that will never end,&#8221; said one Twitter user. &#8220;Subsidy is addictive. It is like narcotics. Air Peace CEO Allen Onyema said the government has &#8220;helped the growth of aviation more than any other government I can think of&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cUavLz5aR3A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Arise News<\/a>: &#8220;We don&#8217;t pay customs duties, we don&#8217;t pay [value added tax] on ticket sales, we don&#8217;t pay [value added tax] on imported aircraft, we don&#8217;t pay [value added tax] on spares and so many other things they&#8217;ve done for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Onyema is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/top-news\/528543-alleged-fraud-u-s-court-fixes-date-for-trial-of-allen-onyemas-suspected-collaborator.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wanted in the US<\/a> over 36 charges related to an alleged $20 million bank fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria spends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/nigeria-expects-fuel-subsidy-could-cost-96-bln-2022-oil-prices-rise-2022-04-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">around a quarter<\/a> of its budget subsidising petrol, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/nigeria-should-end-fuel-subsidy-speed-reforms-boost-growth-world-bank-says-2021-11-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">against the advice<\/a> of the World Bank. These subsidies mean that, although it is Africa&#8217;s biggest oil producer, the recent rise in the global oil price has <a href=\"https:\/\/climatehomenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6316d25f7b68919349e54a251&amp;id=bc627d7b7b&amp;e=41888a8132\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost the government
