{"id":44223,"date":"2021-06-10T15:28:31","date_gmt":"2021-06-10T14:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=44223"},"modified":"2021-06-10T15:44:17","modified_gmt":"2021-06-10T14:44:17","slug":"tar-sands-companies-aim-net-zero-2050-no-plan-extract-less-oil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/06\/10\/tar-sands-companies-aim-net-zero-2050-no-plan-extract-less-oil\/","title":{"rendered":"Tar sands companies aim for &#8216;net zero&#8217; by 2050 &#8211; with no plan to extract less oil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Canadian tar sands producers have committed to achieve net zero emissions in their operations by 2050 to \u201chelp Canada meet its climate goal\u201d while continuing to extract and produce oil for the next 30 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Five major oil companies, Canadian Natural Resources, Cenovus Energy, Imperial, MEG Energy and Suncor Energy, which extract some of the world\u2019s most carbon-intensive oil, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2021\/06\/09\/2244216\/0\/en\/Canada-s-largest-oil-sands-producers-announce-unprecedented-alliance-to-achieve-net-zero-greenhouse-gas-emissions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> they had formed the Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero alliance on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The companies, which together operate about 90% of Canada\u2019s tar sands, said they will work with the Canadian government and the provincial government of Alberta to roll out technologies that will enable them to cut emissions from their extraction and production process.<\/p>\n<p>Prime minister Justin Trudeau has committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. In 2018, the oil and gas sector was the largest source of Canada&#8217;s emissions, accounting for 26% of its total, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/content\/dam\/eccc\/documents\/pdf\/cesindicators\/ghg-emissions\/2020\/greenhouse-gas-emissions-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to government data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tar sands companies said the alliance aims to \u201cdevelop an actionable approach\u201d to cut emissions while \u201cpreserving the more than $3 trillion in oil sands contribution\u201d to Canada\u2019s economy to 2050.<\/p>\n<p>But they made no mention of phasing out production. The &#8220;net zero&#8221; strategy does not extend to emissions from consumers burning the oil, which are many times larger than those from the extraction process.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/05\/10\/tar-sands-executive-named-canadian-climate-champion-ahead-cop26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tar sands<\/strong> executive named as Canadian \u2018climate champion\u2019 ahead of Cop26<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, planned oil production in Canada would lead to a 17% expansion between 2019 and 2030, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/ggon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Oil-and-Gas-Phase-Out.-Media-Backgrounder-for-April-22-Summit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent analysis by Stockholm Environment Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This goes against modelling by the International Energy Agency (IEA), which found that new investments in expanding oil and gas production <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/05\/18\/iea-end-fossil-fuel-expansion-now-net-zero-energy-emissions-2050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">must stop by the end of the year<\/a> for the sector to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of greenwash is worse than meaningless &#8211; it&#8217;s dangerous,\u201d Alex Doukas, senior consultant at the Denmark-based KR Foundation, said of the alliance. \u201cIt fails to cover emissions associated with the tar sands products themselves. Nobody should cheer this nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laurie van der Burg, campaigner at Oil Change International, told Climate Home News: &#8220;These plans lack the one and only action that is most vital to cutting emissions: cutting dirty oil and gas production.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the Canadian tar sands net-zero alliance cared about climate action it would have committed to cut production by 2030.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Van der Burg added that tar sands producers risked facing litigation over the plans, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/05\/26\/shell-ordered-slash-emissions-45-2030-historic-court-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a court ruling against oil giant Shell<\/a>, which established that real emissions reductions were necessary for oil and gas companies to meet their obligations under the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/productiongap.org\/2020report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Environment Programme<\/a>, global oil production must fall by 4% every year between now and 2030 to maintain a chance of staying below 1.5C of warming.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/06\/09\/new-zealand-climate-plan-criticised-cow-shaped-hole\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>New Zealand<\/strong> climate plan criticised over \u2018cow-shaped hole\u2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because it is thick and viscous, oil from tar sands takes a lot of energy to extract and refine, making its production <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nata.aero\/data\/files\/gia\/environmental\/bllcghg2005.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three to four times more greenhouse gas intensive<\/a> than conventional crude oil.<\/p>\n<p>To meet the goal, the alliance plans to create a corridor to link oil sands facilities from Fort McMurray to the Cold Lake regions and channel CO2 to a carbon sequestration hub.<\/p>\n<p>Energy efficiency measures, electrification of operations, producing hydrogen and carbon capture and storage technology would be deployed requiring \u201csignificant investment\u201d from both the industry and government, the companies said.<\/p>\n<p>The alliance said \u201cinternationally recognised forecasts\u201d indicate fossil fuel will continue to be part of the energy mix to 2050 to justify the initiative &#8211; contrary to the latest IEA net zero report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery credible energy forecast indicates that oil will be a major contributor to the energy mix in the decades ahead and even beyond 2050,\u201d said Sonya Savage, Alberta\u2019s minister of energy, claiming this would lead to the production of \u201cnet zero barrels of oil\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Net-zero latest<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Canadian oil sands producers said on Wednesday they would form an alliance to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from their operations by 2050&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WjuVD53quZ\">https:\/\/t.co\/WjuVD53quZ<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bTyUKwHk4m\">pic.twitter.com\/bTyUKwHk4m<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Simon Evans (@DrSimEvans) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrSimEvans\/status\/1402643241628061700?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 9, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Under the IEA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/05\/18\/iea-end-fossil-fuel-expansion-now-net-zero-energy-emissions-2050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first comprehensive 1.5C scenario<\/a>, the agency projects a drop in oil demand of 75% between 2020 and 2050, with fossil fuels supplying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/05\/18\/iea-end-fossil-fuel-expansion-now-net-zero-energy-emissions-2050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">slightly over one-fifth of total energy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tzeporah Berman, chair of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, described the alliance as \u201cabsurd\u201d. In <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tzeporah\/status\/1402647883887771651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a tweet<\/a>, she said measures to reduce emission intensity and develop carbon capture and storage were \u201cclearly not enough\u201d to help the world meet its climate goal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/subscribe\/\"><b>Want more climate news?\u00a0<\/b>Sign up to get updates straight to your inbox<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the main checks on tar sands producers&#8217; bullishness is organised opposition to infrastructure projects to connect Alberta to key export markets.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, TC Energy abandoned plans for the Keystone XL pipeline, which would have transported 830,000 barrels of oil a day to refineries along the US\u2019 Gulf Coast. The decision comes after Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/01\/18\/keystone-xl-cancellation-wake-call-canada-address-oil-gas-blind-spot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">revoked permits for the pipeline expansion<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n<p>It was hailed a victory by climate campaigners and indigenous communities who fought the project for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Keystone XL is now the most famous fossil fuel project killed by the climate movement, but it won&#8217;t be the last,\u201d said Jamie Henn, co-founder of 350.org. \u201cNow it&#8217;s time to go a step further and say no to all new fossil fuel projects everywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/indd.adobe.com\/view\/e0092323-3e91-4e5c-95e0-098ee42f9dd1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published research<\/a> warning that ending the expansion of the fossil fuel sector was not enough to keep the 1.5C within reach, and an exit strategy from existing production is required.<\/p>\n<p>The study, from the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology in Sydney, found that carbon emissions from existing fossil fuel projects would lead to 66% more emissions in 2030 than is compatible with a 1.5C trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Sven Teske, who led the research, said: \u201cNational governments must establish binding limits for the extraction volumes for coal, oil and gas,\u201d adding that new investments risked becoming stranded because of the falling prices of renewable energy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The alliance of Canadian oil producers makes no mention of winding down oil production, which modelling shows is necessary to achieve global climate goals","protected":false},"author":39,"featured_media":44225,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[737,6,598,4603],"tags":[124,646],"coauthors":[4267],"class_list":["post-44223","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-efficiency","category-energy","category-fossil-fuels","category-netzero","tag-canada","tag-tar-sands","type-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Tar sands companies aim for &#039;net zero&#039;
