She campaigned for environmental justice and is tough on holding oil and gas companies to account for their pollution. The first black woman chosen to run for vice-president, she will add &#8220;fire-power&#8221; behind Biden&#8217;s climate plan, supporters say.<\/p>\n<p>If they win on 3 November &#8211; and there is no guarantee of an easy ride &#8211; the pair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/12\/kamala-harris-might-help-night-day-shift-us-global-climate-diplomacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">could spur global climate action<\/a>, undermine the laggards and energize the vanguards, filling a climate diplomacy void left by Donald Trump&#8217;s withdrawal from global commitments to cut emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The big question is whether Biden and Harris can navigate the US&#8217; complex relationship with China and cooperate with Beijing on raising ambition\u00a0 despite a raft of tensions over trade, intellectual property rights and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>But to have any credibility on the international stage, they will first have to prove they can cut emissions at home&#8230;. for that, they first need to win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This week\u2019s stories<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/12\/kamala-harris-might-help-night-day-shift-us-global-climate-diplomacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kamala Harris might help \u2018night and day\u2019 shift for US on global climate diplomacy<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/13\/wind-solar-generate-10-world-electricity-doubling-share-since-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wind, solar generate 10% of world electricity, doubling share since 2015<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/13\/green-shift-urged-revive-brazils-economy-shield-amazon-forests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green shift urged to revive Brazil\u2019s economy and shield Amazon forests<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/13\/un-climate-science-report-likely-delayed-beyond-2021-glasgow-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Most of UN climate science report likely to be delayed beyond 2021 Glasgow summit<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/13\/angola-ratifies-paris-agreement-promising-ambitious-climate-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Angola ratifies Paris Agreement promising more ambitious climate plan<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Trending\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Covid-19 hit energy demand, coal generation fell by its largest half-year decline in decades. For the first time, the world\u2019s coal fleet ran at less than half capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Climate think tank Ember estimates that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/13\/wind-solar-generate-10-world-electricity-doubling-share-since-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">30% of coal\u2019s decline was due to increased wind and solar generation<\/a>. Since 2015, wind and solar have doubled their market share to generate a tenth of global electricity between January and June.<\/p>\n<p>But the transition is not happening fast enough to meet the world&#8217;s tougher climate goal. According to some analysis, coal needs to fall to just 6% of global electricity generation by 2030 from about a third today to limit temperature rise to 1.5C. That means steep cuts throughout the 2020s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Never too late&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Angola ratified the Paris Agreement this week leaving just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/13\/countries-yet-ratify-paris-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seven countries to formally endorse the climate deal<\/a> (leaving out the US which will become the only nation to formally exit the accord on 4 November).<\/p>\n<p>A climate diplomat said Angola had been in no rush to ratify the agreement before making sure it had the tools and data to monitor emissions. Now that it does, the government is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/13\/angola-ratifies-paris-agreement-promising-ambitious-climate-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">working to design a climate plan<\/a> to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/edking_I\/status\/1294197250734927872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a seemingly shifting UN deadline<\/a> for countries to update their pledges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230; but later than expected\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And as timetables continue to slip, most of a major UN scientific report on climate change won&#8217;t be ready before the Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow in November 2021 because of delays caused by Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>Only one of the three sections of the next Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is expected to be published before next year&#8217;s summit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/13\/un-climate-science-report-likely-delayed-beyond-2021-glasgow-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alister Doyle reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recovery\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/08\/13\/green-shift-urged-revive-brazils-economy-shield-amazon-forests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">considerably boost the country&#8217;s growth<\/a> by embracing low-carbon policies, according to an international study in partnership with World Bank executives.<\/p>\n<p>It found that measures such as reducing deforestation, promoting sustainable agriculture and developing cleaner transport, could cut emissions beyond Brazil&#8217;s current 2030 climate pledge, create two million jobs and add the equivalent of Belgium&#8217;s GDP to the country&#8217;s growth over the next 10 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/newsletter-sign-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sign up<\/a>\u00a0to get our weekly newsletter straight to your inbox, plus breaking news, investigations and extra bulletins from key events","protected":false},"author":39,"featured_media":42294,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3858,6,3822,4171,439,10,1483,98,3859],"tags":[],"coauthors":[4267],"class_list":["post-42292","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-policy","category-energy","category-indcs","category-paris-agreement","category-renewables","category-research","category-un-climate-talks","category-us","category-world","type-newsletter"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.3 -
