{"id":41619,"date":"2020-04-01T12:20:04","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T11:20:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=41619"},"modified":"2020-04-01T12:20:04","modified_gmt":"2020-04-01T11:20:04","slug":"coronavirus-pandemic-threatens-climate-monitoring-wmo-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/04\/01\/coronavirus-pandemic-threatens-climate-monitoring-wmo-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus pandemic threatens climate monitoring, WMO warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The coronavirus pandemic risks reducing the amount and quality of weather observations and climate and atmospheric monitoring, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has warned. <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The WMO\u2019s Global Observing System provides critical data and observations on the state of the atmosphere, oceans and land surface which inform weather analyses, forecasts and warning signals around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Large parts of the observing system, such as satellite components and ground-based networks, are partly or fully automated and are expected to continue to function for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>But if restrictions to contain Covid-19 continue for more than a few weeks, the lack of repairs, maintenance and deployments \u201cwill become of increasing concern,\u201d the WMO said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Manual parts of the observing system have already been significantly affected by the pandemic. Commercial planes, for example, provide in-flight measurements of ambient temperature and wind patterns \u2013 an important source of information for weather prediction and climate monitoring.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/04\/01\/zoom-climate-diplomacy-technology-doesnt-help-build-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zoom climate diplomacy<\/strong>: \u2018Technology doesn\u2019t help build trust\u2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The data contributes to the Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay programme (Amdar) which collects, processes and transmits the information to ground stations via satellite or radio links.<\/p>\n<p>The collapse of air travel, particularly over Europe, has seen a \u201cdramatic\u201d decrease in the number of measurements, the WMO said.<\/p>\n<p>Data from Eumetnet, a network of 31 European national meteorological services, shows the significant decline in observations provided by airlines such as EasyJet and Germanwings in the past month.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41625\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41625\" class=\"wp-image-41625\" src=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2020\/04\/EUMETNET-data.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2020\/04\/01111912\/EUMETNET-data.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2020\/04\/01111912\/EUMETNET-data-226x168.jpg 226w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2020\/04\/01111912\/EUMETNET-data-453x337.jpg 453w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-41625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Source: Eumetnet via WMO)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lars Peter Riishojgaard, director of the Earth System Branch in WMO\u2019s infrastructure department, said that as the decrease of aircraft weather observations is expected to continue, \u201cwe may expect a gradual decrease in reliability of the forecasts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>WMO said European countries affiliated to the network are currently discussing ways to boost the short-term capabilities of other parts of their observing networks to partly mitigate the loss of aircraft observations.<\/p>\n<p>In developing countries, the meteorological community still relies on surface-based weather observations that are compiled and processed manually. Over the last two weeks, WMO reported a \u201csignificant decrease\u201d in the availability of manual observations.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2020\/03\/30\/japan-sticks-2030-climate-goals-accused-disappointing-lack-ambition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Japan sticks to 2030 climate goals<\/strong>, accused of a \u2018disappointing\u2019 lack of ambition<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas warned that although national meteorological and hydrological services currently continue to provide data and observations, \u201cwe are mindful of the increasing constraints on capacity and resources\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impacts of climate change and growing amount of weather-related disasters continue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Covid-19 pandemic poses an additional challenge, and may exacerbate multi-hazard risks at a single country level. Therefore it is essential that governments pay attention to their national early warning and weather observing capacities despite the coronavirus crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the EU\u2019s earth observation programme Copernicus is helping researchers and policy-makers monitor the atmosphere and air quality across Europe. The agency has launched \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/atmosphere.copernicus.eu\/european-air-quality-information-support-covid-19-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a web platform<\/a> \u00a0to provide updated air quality information on a daily and weekly basis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Data for weather forecasts and climate monitoring provided by in-flight
