{"id":38939,"date":"2019-03-15T13:18:27","date_gmt":"2019-03-15T13:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=38939"},"modified":"2019-03-15T13:21:15","modified_gmt":"2019-03-15T13:21:15","slug":"germany-ready-join-global-coal-phase-alliance-environment-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2019\/03\/15\/germany-ready-join-global-coal-phase-alliance-environment-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany ready to join global coal phase-out alliance: environment minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Germany is\u00a0ready\u00a0to join an international alliance committed to phasing out coal use, environment minister Svenja Schulze has told national\u00a0newspaper Taz.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0specially appointed commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2019\/01\/26\/german-quit-coal-2038-commission-proposal\/\">advised in January<\/a> the country can\u00a0stop burning coal by 2038. On Thursday, chancellor Angela Merkel formed a &#8220;climate cabinet&#8221; from different ministries to steer a framework climate law through parliament.<\/p>\n<p>These domestic steps put Germany, one of the heaviest coal users in Europe, in a position to share its commitment with the world, according to Schulze.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can now finally join the international alliance of coal-exit countries and the Powering Past Coal Alliance,&#8221; she\u00a0said, in an interview with Taz, Die Tageszeitung&#8217;s weekend edition, shared before publication with Climate Home News. &#8220;I will get this on it its way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Climate news in your inbox?<\/strong> Sign up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/newsletter-sign-up\/\">here<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Schulze, a member of the Social Democratic Party, is among the greener voices in Germany&#8217;s governing coalition.\u00a0Her stance has yet to be endorsed by ministerial colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>Germany gets some 35% of its electricity from coal and has a significant mining sector. Moves to quit the polluting fuel have met fierce resistance from industry, workers and affected communities.<\/p>\n<p>By bringing together representatives of a wide range of interest groups, the coal commission sought to find a durable compromise between climate, economic and social goals. Its recommendations still need to be translated into law.<\/p>\n<p>Getting Germany on board would be a big win for the <a href=\"https:\/\/poweringpastcoal.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Powering Past Coal Alliance<\/a>, a club <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2017\/10\/11\/uk-canada-announce-global-alliance-end-coal-power\/\">convened by the UK and Canada<\/a> to support national shifts to cleaner energy. The alliance counts 30 countries, 22 subnational governments and 28\u00a0businesses as members.<\/p>\n<p>The UK has slashed its reliance on coal from around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofgem.gov.uk\/data-portal\/electricity-generation-mix-quarter-and-fuel-source-gb\" target=\"_blank\">40% of electricity generation<\/a> to less than 5% in a decade, closing several older power stations. That enabled the birthplace of the industrial revolution to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessgreen.com\/bg\/news\/3008066\/study-uk-leads-g7-at-cutting-emissions-and-growing-economy\" target=\"_blank\">cut emissions faster<\/a> than other developed economies.<\/p>\n<p>Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.export.gov\/article?id=Canada-Power-Generation-and-Renewable-Energy\" target=\"_blank\">gets 9% of power<\/a> from coal and has committed to close the last plant by 2030.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Global issues need global coverage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CHN is dedicated to bringing you the best climate reporting from around the world.
