{"id":37577,"date":"2018-09-24T16:46:55","date_gmt":"2018-09-24T15:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=37577"},"modified":"2018-09-24T16:46:55","modified_gmt":"2018-09-24T15:46:55","slug":"climate-scientists-reject-offensive-claim-us-saudi-meddling-landmark-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2018\/09\/24\/climate-scientists-reject-offensive-claim-us-saudi-meddling-landmark-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate scientists reject &#8216;offensive&#8217; claim of US, Saudi meddling in landmark report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Climate scientists have denied that polluters are\u00a0unduly influencing a UN special report on the tough 1.5C global warming limit, in response to an article in the Observer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A week before\u00a0the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)\u00a0meets in Incheon, South Korea, to finalise the UN report, the Observer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2018\/sep\/23\/scientists-changing-global-warming-report-please-polluters?CMP=share_btn_tw\" target=\"_blank\">accused its authors of censoring<\/a>\u00a0results to appease countries like\u00a0Saudi Arabia, the US and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The claim centres on\u00a0warnings that were cut\u00a0between drafts of the summary for policymakers, which digests a huge body of research. As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2018\/06\/27\/new-leaked-draft-of-un-1-5c-climate-report-in-full-and-annotated\/\">Climate Home News&#8217; analysis<\/a> of the final government draft dated 4 June shows, other\u00a0messages were strengthened or clarified in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Myles Allen, a lead coordinating author of the summary for policymakers,\u00a0said it was &#8220;offensive&#8221; to suggest scientists did what governments told them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is painted as governments bullying scientists. It is demeaning to the governments, because it suggests they act unethically, and it is demeaning to the scientists, because it suggests we can be bullied,&#8221; he told Climate Home News on the sidelines of a conference in Oxford.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Governments are asking for clarifications and pointing out where there is scope for misunderstanding of what has been said&#8230; It is actually a constructive process,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2018\/06\/27\/new-leaked-draft-of-un-1-5c-climate-report-in-full-and-annotated\/\"><strong>Leaked<\/strong> final government draft of UN 1.5C climate report \u2013 annotated<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Others rebutted the\u00a0story on Twitter. &#8220;Drafts &amp; comments will be publicly available so these claims will be testable. I doubt there&#8217;s downplaying due to political pressure,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/richardabetts\/status\/1043846836660973568\" target=\"_blank\">wrote Richard Betts<\/a>, professor of climate impacts at the University of Exeter and Met Office Hadley Centre who was a reviewer on the early drafts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Authors any [sic] many countries work hard to achieve fair balance,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/piersforster\/status\/1043791984056512512\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted Piers Forster<\/a>, climate physicist at the Priestley Centre, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/piersforster\/status\/1043795031696510978\" target=\"_blank\">adding<\/a>: &#8220;A lot of potential impacts maybe real but have limited evidence behind them. Need to evaluate them for full picture of risk but should be clear where impacts are more robust and known.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The special report on 1.5C pulls together available evidence\u00a0on the stretch target in the Paris Agreement. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2018\/06\/27\/warming-2c-substantially-harmful-1-5c-draft-un-report\/\">summary leaked in June found<\/a> that\u00a01.5C of global warming was significantly safer for humanity than the 2C upper threshold of ambition.<\/p>\n<p>It is politically sensitive because the tougher target implies much faster cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, which will hurt economies dependent on fossil fuels.
