{"id":36731,"date":"2018-06-13T16:46:43","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T15:46:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=36731"},"modified":"2018-07-09T10:43:17","modified_gmt":"2018-07-09T09:43:17","slug":"7-surprising-things-carbon-footprint-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2018\/06\/13\/7-surprising-things-carbon-footprint-food\/","title":{"rendered":"7 surprising things about the carbon footprint of your food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Everything we buy has a carbon footprint\u00a0and food is no exception. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yearly, we produce <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/en\/item\/216137\/icode\/\" target=\"_blank\">five billion tonnes<\/a> of\u00a0carbon dioxide equivalent\u00a0from crop and livestock production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From seed to mouth, it can be easy to forget how much in terms of production goes into our food. So here\u2019s a couple of things you may not already know about the carbon footprint of your favourite dishes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Sandwich fillers<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicken\u00a0isn&#8217;t the most carbon-intensive meat, but it may come as a surprise to know that some of our favourite veggies have an equally poor carbon record. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers from the University of Manchester <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352550917300635\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently calculated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the carbon footprint of ingredients in British sandwiches. For sandwich eaters, cutting out tomatoes from a classic BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato) may be better for the environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural gas and electricity are used for the heating and lighting of greenhouses for tomatoes in the UK, contributing to their high carbon footprint. A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/assets.wwf.org.uk\/downloads\/how_low_report_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2009 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the WWF found that in the UK, tomato, pepper, and cucumber production is worse for the environment than chicken and turkey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Tofu of us consider everything<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Demand for soy is driving deforestation, but think\u00a0again before you put all the blame onto tofu eaters or the vegan movement. Around <a href=\"http:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/what_we_do\/footprint\/agriculture\/soy\/consumers\/\" target=\"_blank\">70%<\/a> of the global soy production is fed directly to livestock.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beef <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6392\/987\" target=\"_blank\">racks up<\/a> to 105kg of\u00a0Co2e per 100g, while tofu produces less than 3.5kg. Trying to feed all those cows has meant that the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expansion in soy has led to deforestation and the decline in other valuable ecosystems that store carbon. The Cerrado, a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> savanna ecoregion of Brazil,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/our_work\/food\/agriculture\/soy\/impacts\/climatechange\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lost half<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its natural vegetation to soybean plantations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study found that deforestation related to soy production in Brazil is responsible for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/1748-9326\/8\/2\/024005\/article\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the country\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36736\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36736\" class=\"wp-image-36736\" src=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2018\/06\/RaceforWater_PeterCharaf_MicroplasticsAzores_2.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2018\/06\/RaceforWater_PeterCharaf_MicroplasticsAzores_2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2018\/06\/RaceforWater_PeterCharaf_MicroplasticsAzores_2-252x168.jpg 252w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2018\/06\/RaceforWater_PeterCharaf_MicroplasticsAzores_2-506x337.jpg 506w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-36736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Microplastics in the Azores (Photo: Creative Commons)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>3. Something fishy about that<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe not strictly carbon footprint related, but microplastics, tiny pieces ranging from 5 millimetres down to 100 nanometers in diameter, are everywhere and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/06\/you-re-eating-microplastics-in-ways-you-don-t-even-realise\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the World Economic Forum suggested that they have been found in a range of foods from fish to honey, chicken, and beer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides polluting seas and oceans, microplastics are swallowed by fish and other marine creatures and enter our system when we eat seafood. Land animals also consume microplastics, although, unlike with fish, we tend not to eat their digestive systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Organic isn\u2019t always better<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organic food has an image of health and sustainability but\u00a0is not necessarily better for the climate\u00a0than\u00a0non-organic food. One <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/aa6cd5\/meta\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in Environmental Research Letters found exactly that in June 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Organic systems require 25 to 110% more land use, use 15% less energy, and have 37% higher eutrophication potential than conventional systems per unit of food,\u201d the study found. \u201cIn addition, organic and conventional systems did not significantly differ in their greenhouse gas emissions or acidification potential&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36734\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36734\" class=\"wp-image-36734\" src=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2018\/06\/burger-1.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2018\/06\/burger-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2018\/06\/burger-1-252x168.jpg 252w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2018\/06\/burger-1-506x337.jpg 506w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-36734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beetroot burger (Photo: George N)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>5. Bleeding burgers<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a variety of reasons why someone would consider going vegetarian, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10584-014-1169-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggesting that going vegetarian \u201ccan cut your carbon footprint in half\u201d. While some vegetarians may miss the flavour of meat, we can\u2019t be certain how many miss being reminded that that\u2019s what they\u2019re eating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, vegetarians and vegans can treat themselves to a meatless patty that literally bleeds&#8230; beetroot juice. Wheat for it<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Most of the emissions from staples such as bread come from the fertiliser used to grow wheat. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nplants201712.epdf?referrer_access_token=oLNEej5_urTsYcSTHDbNBdRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0M1OLooIbkqKF3lcYwqnK9uHB_PqLuFMLGcQ6GiY6-bqcn053Tc-XzJ99vngra0H9vLdDgTE0kpxVkKMsuLvvMs8Qd6J6IZAGiCWtcBQY007dfD43-UCOC335okPa-ObsLETime-Po6RBWaFUaQOXAJsA5hzdn2MDnwGJmz5hoAzmmEHWMqcH3Wke_A_OVNFMAhDaRODOCAnHo1md58aoe4&amp;tracking_referrer=edition.cnn.com\" target=\"_blank\">2017 study<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0found that ammonium nitrate fertiliser accounts for 43% of all the greenhouse gas emissions in the production process of a loaf of bread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But can different types of bread be better or worse for the environment (besides being better or worse for your body)? Cereals used in bread, such as oats and barley, have <a href=\"https:\/\/cereals.ahdb.org.uk\/media\/176733\/g57_understanding_carbon_footprinting_for_cereals_and_oilseeds.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">smaller carbon footprints<\/a> than typical wheat used in white loaves, as well as rye.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.\u00a0One way isn&#8217;t the best way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Blanket agricultural production doesn&#8217;t work across the world, and it&#8217;s important to consider local ecosystems when looking at how best to produce food with the lowest carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0vegetarian typically has a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10584-014-1169-1\" target=\"_blank\">smaller carbon footprint<\/a> than a meat eater but the plant-based diet isn&#8217;t practical everywhere, especially for those who live in dry or cold places that cannot support the growth of most vegetable crops.<\/p>\n<p>Although approximately 1,799 gallons of water is needed per pound\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gracelinks.org\/blog\/7858\" target=\"_blank\">to raise a cow<\/a>, the amount of water needed in order to successfully farm in desert-like climates <a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/9581\/-Global%20Deserts%20Outlook-2006665.pdf?sequence=3&amp;amp;isAllowed=\" target=\"_blank\">can be huge<\/a> and is currently unsustainable. Even though it may be better for the climate to be vegetarian, for some, that just isn&#8217;t sustainable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"From sandwiches to &#8216;bleeding&#8217;
