{"id":35162,"date":"2017-10-27T12:08:35","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T11:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=35162"},"modified":"2017-11-01T12:34:57","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T12:34:57","slug":"supersonic-super-rich-super-polluting-next-generation-business-jets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2017\/10\/27\/supersonic-super-rich-super-polluting-next-generation-business-jets\/","title":{"rendered":"Supersonic, super-rich, super-polluting: the next generation of business jets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span class=\"s1\">A new\u00a0fleet\u00a0of supersonic jets for the super-rich could be flying over Europe within ten years, sparking\u00a0calls from\u00a0environmentalists\u00a0for the EU to urgently regulate their CO2 pollution.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Concorde, the world&#8217;s last commercial supersonic aircraft, generated three times more noise, NOx and CO2 than today&#8217;s subsonic planes and contributed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/pdf\/special-reports\/spm\/av-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">five times more<\/a> to global warming,\u00a0due to the high altitudes at which it released its emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">No carbon dioxide regulations, either international or European, have so far been put in place for the next generation of supersonic aircraft, which the\u00a0International Civil Aviation Organisation (Icao) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icao.int\/environmental-protection\/Pages\/Supersonic-Aircraft-Noise-Standards-Development.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">expects to begin certifying<\/a>\u00a0by as early as 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">There are already hundreds of these\u00a0jets planned.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerionsupersonic.com\/\">Aerion<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">, a US startup which has already received over $100m in investment to design an A-S2 supersonic business trijet with Airbus, told Climate Home it expected its first planes to come\u00a0to market in 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2017\/10\/26\/shipping-executive-deliberately-mislead-public-climate\/\"><strong>Shipping executive:<\/strong> \u2018We have deliberately misled public on climate\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe anticipate beginning construction in 2020 or 2021,\u201d said Jeff Miller, Aerion&#8217;s\u00a0vice president for communications. \u201cOur production target is 36 aircraft a year and we see a market for about 600 supersonic business jets.\u201d Flexjet has already placed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aviationweek.com\/nbaa-2015\/flexjet-order-20-supersonic-jets-boosts-aerion\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">a $2.4bn order for 20 of the planes<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The\u00a0firm&#8217;s\u00a0jets\u00a0would be small,\u00a0heavy\u00a0and\u00a0capable of shaving\u00a0off\u00a0up to half the long haul flight\u00a0time for what one analyst called \u201cthe\u00a01% of the 1%\u201d of business travellers who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The A-S2&#8217;s modern turbofan engine will minimise aerodynamic &#8216;drag&#8217; and make\u00a0it at least 20% more fuel efficient than its cone-shaped predecessor,\u00a0according to the firm&#8217;s calculations. This would still be significantly more polluting than today&#8217;s subsonic aircraft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe will meet all the latest standards for CO2 and NOx and any other kind of emissions,\u201d Miller said, adding the engine designs were based on cutting edge &#8220;efficient&#8221; technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Supersonic\u00a0jets are too heavy to fall within current standards and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Daniel Rutherford, the aviation director of the International Council on Clean Transportation, which uncovered the VW diesel scandal, was sceptical about the jets&#8217; ability to meet\u00a0the existing\u00a0limits for lighter craft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy understanding is that the newest supersonic designs being developed would fail Icao\u2019s subsonic CO2 standard by a wide margin,\u201d he told Climate Home News. \u201cIt takes a lot of energy to accelerate and then operate an aircraft at supersonic speeds. On an real-world basis, I\u2019d expect even improved supersonic aircraft to be twice &#8211; or even more &#8211; carbon intensive than a modern subsonic aircraft. Speed kills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35171\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35171\" class=\"wp-image-35171\" src=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2017\/10\/Aerion-AS2-Preliminary-cabin-renderings-from-INAIRVATION-and-Design-Q-Day_HR.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2017\/10\/Aerion-AS2-Preliminary-cabin-renderings-from-INAIRVATION-and-Design-Q-Day_HR.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2017\/10\/Aerion-AS2-Preliminary-cabin-renderings-from-INAIRVATION-and-Design-Q-Day_HR-280x168.jpg 280w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2017\/10\/Aerion-AS2-Preliminary-cabin-renderings-from-INAIRVATION-and-Design-Q-Day_HR-562x337.jpg 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The AS-2 will shave off up to half the long haul flight time for what one analyst called \u201cthe 1% of the 1%\u201d of business travellers who can afford it (Image: Aerion)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The current lack of standards for supersonic jets is creating \u201ca chicken and egg situation\u201d, according to Tim Johnson, the director of the Aviation Environment Federation (AEF).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOn the one hand, industry argues that you need new data to develop standards because you only have old data from Concorde,\u201d he said. \u201cSo you have to develop prototypes. But our fear is that once this has been done, the standards are usually set around the technology, because of the money that has already been invested in it. We are obviously very alarmed about that. We&#8217;d like the standards to drive the market and not the other way around.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To the contrary though, the European Council of EU ministers is pushing for the approaching supersonic fleet to prioritise any standards that emerge from Icao over EU environmental law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An EU working document dated January 2017 says that where noise and polluting emissions are concerned, all airplanes, engines and parts in the supersonic class \u201cshall comply with the [Icao] environmental protection requirements\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/newsletter-sign-up\/\"><strong>All the COP23 news:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Not just Donald Trump! Climate Home will be taking its largest ever team to November\u2019s UN climate talks in Bonn.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/newsletter-sign-up\/\">Sign up for our daily newsletter from\u00a0the meeting<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">No other Icao states or actors have waived their right to set stronger environmental regulations in advance of potential measures at the global aviation forum, according to\u00a0green think tank T&amp;E and the AEF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bill Hemmings, the aviation and shipping director of T&amp;E, said: \u201cEurope&#8217;s countries promised that the next generation of supersonic jets would only be allowed to operate in Europe with public acceptance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBut EU officials could be\u00a0completely undermining this commitment when taking decisions behind closed doors at Icao and at the EU Council if the proposed powers of Europe\u2019s aircraft certification body&#8230; are curtailed,\u201d said Hemmings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Aerion technicians say operators of\u00a0its\u00a0business jets would have to offset their emissions under Icao&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icao.int\/environmental-protection\/Pages\/A39_CORSIA_FAQ2.aspx\"><span class=\"s2\">Corsia carbon offsetting scheme<\/span><\/a>\u00a0if they emitted more than 10,000 metric tones of CO2 a year in international\u00a0airspace.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Miller said Aerion viewed Icao, not regional or national governments, as the appropriate venue for global aviation regulations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The firm is far from alone in\u00a0developing supersonic jets that could fly under the regulatory radar.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spikeaerospace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spike aerospace<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">, funded by Wall St investors, is planning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/news\/articles\/spike-poised-to-begin-testing-scaled-supersonic-demo-441531\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">high speed flight tests next year<\/span><\/a>\u00a0ahead of a roll out of its S-512 business jets by 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/boomsupersonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boom<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0also expects flight tests next year for its 55-seat XB-1 supersonic plane which\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-40340875\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">should be brought into service in 2023<\/span><\/a>, with support from investors in Silicon Valley, London and New York. Virgin&#8217;s Richard Branson has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/838645\/virgins-richard-branson-invests-in-supersonic-jet-company-boom-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">promised to buy its first ten supersonic jets<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and five unnamed airlines have reportedly ordered 76 of the jets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Concorde, which made its last flight 14 years ago, regularly provoked sharp intakes of breath with sonic booms that broke the sound barrier.\u00a0Aerion&#8217;s A-S2 will only reach speeds above Mach 1 (around 1000mph) over water, and fly at an altitude of 51,000 ft &#8211; compared to Concorde&#8217;s 60,000 ft.\u00a0A NASA supersonic X-plane which allegedly makes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-completes-milestone-toward-quieter-supersonic-x-plane\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">a &#8216;soft thump&#8217; rather than a &#8216;sonic boom&#8217;<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is due to go into construction at Lockheed Martin next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rolls-Royce also reportedly sees future demand for supersonic jets among what Flight International magazine called \u201ca growing international population of billionaires\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Funding for such ventures is usually a closely guarded secret, although Boom said it had taken in $41m earlier this year. That is still a drop in the ocean compared to the $4bn Aerion says it will need for development and certification in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Funded by the oil billionairre Robert Bass, Aerion is collaborating on the A-S2 project with Airbus Defence and Space, which Miller says has made \u201ca substantial contribution\u201d to the engineering of its
