{"id":34948,"date":"2017-10-03T18:07:16","date_gmt":"2017-10-03T17:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=34948"},"modified":"2017-10-03T18:07:16","modified_gmt":"2017-10-03T17:07:16","slug":"new-york-city-aims-carbon-neutral-2050","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2017\/10\/03\/new-york-city-aims-carbon-neutral-2050\/","title":{"rendered":"New York City aims to be carbon neutral by 2050"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The day after Donald Trump <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2017\/06\/01\/us-leaves-paris-climate-agreement-wants-come-back\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced his intention to withdraw<\/a> from the Paris climate accord, <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/386-17\/mayor-de-blasio-signs-executive-order-adopt-goals-paris-climate-agreement-new-york-city#\/0\" target=\"_blank\">New York mayor Bill de Blasio said<\/a>\u00a0the president&#8217;s home city was going to take a different path.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now the US&#8217; largest city has released a plan that aligns its future to the\u00a0most ambitious target of the Paris deal &#8211;\u00a0limiting global\u00a0warming to 1.5C.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, de Blasio released a <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/assets\/sustainability\/downloads\/pdf\/publications\/1point5-AligningNYCwithParisAgrmtFORWEB.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">citywide plan<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0outlined the\u00a0first three years worth of measures as the city seeks to cut emissions by 80% below 2005 levels by the middle of the century. The plan &#8211; called\u00a0<em>1.5C: Aligning New York City with the Paris Climate Agreement<\/em> &#8211; also\u00a0called for\u00a0the city to offset all remaining carbon pollution by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve &#8220;carbon neutrality&#8221; in just over three decades, the plan says New York will lead the development of a &#8220;global protocol&#8221;. It said this could include\u00a0large scale renewables, carbon sequestration and carbon offsets to account for all residual pollution.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/newsletter-sign-up\/\"><b>Climate Weekly:\u00a0<\/b>Sign up for your essential climate news\u00a0update<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The mayor has called on every agency of the city government to develop strategies\u00a0to comply with the goal of 1.5C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">De Blasio said: \u201cBig problems require big solutions \u2013 and New Yorkers are already hard at work to meet the most ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement. In the Trump era, cities have to lead the way when it comes to fighting climate change. It heralded the advent of the electric car, announcing $10 million for fast charging hubs in\u00a0all five boroughs by 2018. By the middle of next decade, it is aiming to install 50 such hubs citywide.<\/p>\n<p>Since Trump became president, almost 200 cities, states and nations &#8211; including New York City &#8211; have\u00a0signed up to a coalition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2017\/09\/18\/jerry-browns-climate-coalition-grows-39-global-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\">led by California governor Jerry Brown<\/a>. That coalition calls on signatories to develop plans in line with the Paris climate goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the face of federal inaction on climate change, it is now more important than ever for cities like New York to step up to fulfil the Paris Agreement,\u201d said\u00a0Daniel Zarrilli, senior director for climate policy in the mayor&#8217;s
