{"id":32545,"date":"2016-12-29T15:40:02","date_gmt":"2016-12-29T15:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=32545"},"modified":"2017-01-02T16:03:32","modified_gmt":"2017-01-02T16:03:32","slug":"our-climate-heroes-of-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/12\/29\/our-climate-heroes-of-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Our climate heroes of 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As politics tilts\u00a0towards\u00a0unreason in many parts of the world,\u00a0the years to come will to require\u00a0a legion of heroes from the grassroots to the highest offices. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here, Climate Home celebrates just a few of the many people we met, spoke to, read and wrote about in 2016 who impressed us by refusing to accept defeat.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>21 US kids<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In November, a group of 21 US youths <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourchildrenstrust.org\/us\/federal-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\">won the right<\/a> to have a\u00a0lawsuit heard in the federal court that will test whether their government can be compelled to act on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>In response to a government motion to dismiss the case, district judge Ann Aiken said: \u201cI have no doubt that the right to a climate system capable of sustaining human life is fundamental to a free and ordered society.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ruling\u00a0could set a precedent for\u00a0a major weapon in fighting new president Donald Trump&#8217;s administration if he\u00a0seeks to strip away regulations that are intended to clean up the US energy sector.<\/p>\n<p>Climate Home&#8217;s Megan Darby <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/03\/09\/us-youth-take-climate-fight-to-oregon-courthouse\/\" target=\"_blank\">spoke to<\/a>\u00a019-year-old Kelsey Juliana in March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho do you serve, government: the interests of the youth, or the interests of the industry?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Tzeporah Berman<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Canadian environmentalist is a long time adversary of the tar sands\u00a0companies that\u00a0have held successive Canadian governments in thrall. In July she <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/07\/11\/meet-the-woman-who-took-on-canadas-tar-sand-barons\/\" target=\"_blank\">spoke to Climate Home&#8217;s Ed King<\/a> about\u00a0negotiations with those companies that\u00a0lead to a cap on what she calls\u00a0the &#8220;single largest and most destructive project on earth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tzeporah Berman   Canadian Environmental Activist\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/56RPH3LG8yc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Ed Hawkins<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hawkins&#8217; graphical representation of a climate\u00a0spinning out of control <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/05\/10\/can-a-gif-change-the-way-we-think-about-global-warming\/\" target=\"_blank\">grabbed the public imagination<\/a>. His original tweet\u00a0has been shared more than 15,000 times and spawned dozens of news articles reaching parts of the internet where the global rise in temperature\u00a0is often ignored or misrepresented.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Spiralling global temperatures from 1850-2016 (full animation) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YETC5HkmTr\">https:\/\/t.co\/YETC5HkmTr<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ypci717AHq\">pic.twitter.com\/Ypci717AHq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ed Hawkins (@ed_hawkins) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ed_hawkins\/status\/729753441459945474?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 9, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs scientists I think we need to communicate, and try different things,&#8221; Hawkins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2016\/05\/11\/this-scientist-just-changed-how-we-think-about-climate-change-with-one-gif\" target=\"_blank\">told the Washington Post<\/a>. Climate Home&#8217;s Megan Darby reported on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/07\/27\/spiral-tastic-climate-change-in-three-animations\/\" target=\"_blank\">many copycat approaches<\/a> it spawned as other scientists rebooted their own findings as spirals.<\/p>\n<p>(Kudos to Ed King and Megan for &#8220;It&#8217;s the GIF that keeps on giving&#8221; and &#8220;the spiral that went viral&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Daphin Juma<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A newly graduated solar engineer from Kenya who runs her own solar installation business. Juma <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/10\/19\/can-this-woman-restore-kenyas-faith-in-solar-power\/\" target=\"_blank\">spoke to Climate Home&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0Africa reporter\u00a0Lou Del Bello about her career ambitions and her wish to ensure that everyone in her community had &#8220;at least some lighting at home&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Juma was trained by the Women in Sustainable Energy and Entrepreneurship (WISEE). She is one of thousands of women entering the workforce around the world as solar technicians.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Mark Carney<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Bank of England governor\u00a0has\u00a0done more than any other in the financial world to raise the risks and opportunities of climate change, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/12\/15\/mark-carney-the-unlikely-climate-champion\/\" target=\"_blank\">says\u00a0Ed King<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In what may become one of the most influential climate reports of all time, Carney helped to produce <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/12\/14\/g20-panel-tells-energy-giants-to-come-clean-on-climate-risks\/\" target=\"_blank\">a document<\/a> that called on corporations\u00a0to get real about the risk climate change poses to their business models. The report\u00a0was backed by some of the world&#8217;s biggest investors and financial institutions, giving it serious clout.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Tokata Iron Eyes<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the late days of 2016, a\u00a0coalition of Indian tribes and environmentalists triumphantly celebrated\u00a0the announcement that the\u00a0North Dakota Access Pipeline had failed to get permission to cross the Missouri River. 13-year-old Iron Eyes, a member of the Sioux tribe\u00a0that owns the downriver\u00a0Standing Rock reservation, was part of a\u00a0local youth movement involved in organising the protests long before they became global news.<\/p>\n<p>Her chat with activist Naomi Klein, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/naomikleinofficial\/videos\/10154731788609919\/\" target=\"_blank\">posted on the latter&#8217;s Facebook page<\/a>\u00a0on the day the pipeline was redirected, is anti-venom for the poisonous US debate that lies ahead. &#8220;I feel like I got my future back,&#8221; she said, causing Klein\u00a0to 100% lose it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fnaomikleinofficial%2Fvideos%2Fvb.12400234918%2F10154731938029919%2F%3Ftype%3D3&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Women at the top of the UNFCCC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2016, the top six UN climate diplomats\u00a0were all women.\u00a0UN climate chief Patricia Espinosa, French environment\u00a0minister S\u00e9gol\u00e8ne Royal, her Moroccan counterpart\u00a0Hakima El Haite and Paris agreement architect Laurence Tubiana lead negotiations in the lead up to the Marrakech talks.\u00a0Saudi Arabian diplomat Sarah Baashan and New Zealand\u2019s former climate ambassador Jo Tyndall joined them as\u00a0co-chairs of the UN talks.<\/p>\n<p>Further down the UNFCCC foodchain, there remains work to be done to bolster gender equality on national delegations. But the sight of so many women &#8211; representing the gender that will<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2015\/dec\/01\/women-victims-climate-change-keys-climate-action\" target=\"_blank\"> suffer more from climate change<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; at the top is heartening.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Richard Betts<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/02\/04\/a-climate-scientist-speaks-its-a-bit-complicated\/\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> with Ed King, Betts\u00a0called on climate scientists to\u00a0face up to the complexity of their subject when engaging in public\u00a0debate. In the face of an ever-growing demand for news and views to come in discrete and definitive packages, Betts has fought the urge to dumb things down.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a point where you can simplify it too much and if you cross that line then it will come back to bite you in the end,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Queen Quet<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The chieftess of the Gullah\/Geechee nation &#8211;\u00a0the ancestors of slaves that live along the low lying sand islands of the lower US east coast &#8211;\u00a0Marquetta Goodwine became the first to represent her people at the UN climate talks in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe land is our family and the waterways are our bloodline. That is how we as the Gullah Geechee people see this land. We are inextricably tied to the land and the Sea Islands,\u201d she <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/11\/02\/former-us-slave-nation-heads-to-marrakech-climate-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\">told Climate Home<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt means so much to our community for me to get there and have our story be a part of this finally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>David\u00a0Attenborough<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Channel 4 science editor Tom Clarke emailed in with some suggestions:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hardly an unsung hero,&#8221; said Clarke, but\u00a0Attenborough used the\u00a0opening and final refrains in the mesmerising Planet Earth 2 to make a rallying cry for us to live up to our responsibility as members of a community of species.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We must protect our planet, and all those creatures who call it home. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PlanetEarth2?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PlanetEarth2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9WpOWbMXgr\">pic.twitter.com\/9WpOWbMXgr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; BBC One (@BBCOne) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCOne\/status\/808051150020714496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 11, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Attenborough&#8217;s latest documentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/news\/planet-earth-2-ii-young-viewers-x-factor-bbc-itv-david-attenborough-vieiwng-figures-ratings-a7449296.html\" target=\"_blank\">had\u00a0more<\/a> 16 to 34 year old\u00a0viewers than the X Factor and he\u00a0repeatedly mentioned climate change, while showcasing the extraordinary world that we are frittering away.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Jerry Brown<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Clarke also thought the governor of California deserved a mention for his defiant stance against\u00a0incoming president Trump. In 2016, Brown <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/08\/25\/california-passes-ambitious-climate-targets\/\" target=\"_blank\">signed a bill<\/a> into state law that mandated some of the deepest carbon emissions cuts in the developed world.<\/p>\n<p>After the US election, Obama officials noted that the states would be a key centre of resistance against Trump&#8217;s predicted attempts to unravel US climate policy. Speaking to scientists in San Fransisco in December, Brown said:\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve got the scientists, we\u2019ve got the lawyers and we\u2019re ready to fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Who were your climate heroes in 2016?
