Hawkins&#8217;\u00a0own blog\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climate-lab-book.ac.uk\/spirals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Climate Lab Book<\/a>\u00a0temporarily crashed under the weight of hits, which totalled around 100,000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/05\/25\/kim-kardashian-v-climate-change-theres-only-one-winner\/\" target=\"_blank\">He&#8217;s no\u00a0Kim Kardashian<\/a>, but as\u00a0sci comms goes, this was a runaway success.<\/p>\n<p>It has inspired scientists from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pik-potsdam.de\/primap-live\/\" target=\"_blank\">Potsdam, Germany<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climate-energy-college.net\/climatecollege.unimelb.edu.au\/spiral\" target=\"_blank\">Melbourne, Australia<\/a> to animate the inexorable rise of carbon dioxide concentrations in the air&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30721 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2016\/07\/ConcentrationSpiral_small2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and how the growing pace of greenhouse gas emissions is eating up the carbon budget to hold global warming below 2C or 1.5C.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30722 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2016\/07\/CarbonBudgetSpiral_small2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Put together with the temperature spiral, they paint a pretty compelling picture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30724 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2016\/07\/TemperatureSpiral_small2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The genius of the original was to\u00a0show how the long term warming trend stood out from the noise of natural variation.<\/p>\n<p>Sceptics might put\u00a0the recent string of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/jul\/20\/june-2016-14th-consecutive-month-of-record-breaking-heat-says-us-agencies\" target=\"_blank\">14 record hot months<\/a> down to El Nino. That weather phenomenon was certainly a factor, but doesn&#8217;t explain\u00a0why the previous decade was\u00a0so clearly warmer than in the 1850s.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to carbon dioxide in the air, the increase is more linear, with some seasonal fluctuation as vegetation levels vary.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/newsletter-sign-up\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Weekly briefing:<\/strong> Sign up for your essential climate politics update<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, the carbon budget graphic joins the dots with human behaviour. It\u00a0shows how smoke from factories and car exhaust pipes is building up.<\/p>\n<p>In Paris last December, 195 countries agreed to try and limit temperature rise from pre-industrial levels &#8220;well below&#8221; 2C and to 1.5C if possible.<\/p>\n<p>That implies a ceiling on the volume of greenhouse gases that can be pumped into the air &#8211; the &#8220;carbon budget&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>There is some uncertainty about how sensitive the climate is to emissions; the budgets shown\u00a0give a two thirds chance of staying within the threshold.<\/p>\n<p>It <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/06\/29\/scientists-window-for-avoiding-1-5c-global-warming-closed\/\" target=\"_blank\">may already be too late<\/a> for\u00a01.5C, as there is a time lag between emissions and their effect on the climate &#8211; and coal plants built today have decades to run.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it remains an important marker for communities on the front line of sea level rise and\u00a0extreme weather.<\/p>\n<p>The more we can eke out the carbon budget, the better their odds become.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"These mesmerising climate
