Hungarian MPs today formally backed the UN\u2019s 2015 climate agreement, making the country the first in the EU to pass legislation to support the deal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to parliamentary records<\/a>, lawmakers voted unanimously to approve the pact, which was agreed by 195 countries in Paris last December.<\/p>\n

France is\u00a0expected to be the second EU member state to ratify the treaty,\u00a0with the Senate set to vote on 8 June. Its lower house has passed<\/a> the law.<\/p>\n

All 28 of the EU\u2019s member states need to gain domestic backing from their parliaments before Brussels can join the UN deal.<\/p>\n

Report:<\/strong>\u00a0Hungary president lends support to Live Earth climate campaign<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Analysts say the early move is unusual, as Hungary has historically sided with Poland and other eastern European states in opposing tougher EU-wide climate laws<\/p>\n

But Climate Home understands president J\u00e1nos \u00c1der was instrumental in getting\u00a0lawmakers to sign up\u00a0quickly.<\/p>\n

55 countries covering 55% of global emissions need to ratify the deal before it comes into force.<\/p>\n

Budapest is also one of the few EU capitals\u00a0to have ratified the 2013-2020 extension to the Kyoto Protocol, currently the world\u2019s only legally binding climate
