When deciding where to drill, it assumes a carbon price of US$30-40 a tonne.<\/p>\n<p>That was revealed in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.total.com\/sites\/default\/files\/atoms\/files\/integrating_climate_into_our_strategy_eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">strategy paper<\/a> published to coincide with Tuesday&#8217;s AGM, in the clearest industry acknowledgment to date of the risks of unfettered exploration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The 2C scenario highlights that a part of the world&#8217;s fossil fuel resources cannot be developed. Total&#8217;s growth strategy takes this into account,&#8221; the document stated.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/05\/23\/exxon-shell-total-and-statoil-make-clean-energy-plays\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Report:<\/strong>\u00a0Exxon, Shell, Total, Statoil renew clean energy drive<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a foreword, chief executive Patrick Pouyanne emphasised the significance of the\u00a0Paris Agreement in shaping the company&#8217;s business plans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;COP21 was definitely a watershed,&#8221;\u00a0he said. &#8220;Despite the current instability worldwide, 195 countries managed to unite around an ambitious climate agreement. That sends a strong message.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The firm is basing its investment decisions around the International Energy Agency&#8217;s 2C scenario. That still sees oil and gas making up nearly half the energy mix in 2035.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8220;strict investment discipline is vital,&#8221; Pouyanne said, to avoid wasting money on costly resources that may be surplus to requirements.<\/p>\n<p>He also aims to ramp up renewables, notably solar and biofuels,\u00a0to form 20% of the company&#8217;s portfolio in 20 years&#8217; time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/05\/11\/pension-holders-petition-funds-on-exxon-chevron-climate-resolutions\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Report:<\/strong>\u00a0Pension holders petition funds on Exxon, Chevron climate resolutions<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Total&#8217;s intervention follows rival Shell&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/05\/11\/shell-unveils-vision-of-2c-compatible-energy-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">unveiling<\/a> of its first ever\u00a02C-compatible energy outlook.<\/p>\n<p>Also holding its AGM on Tuesday, Shell came under pressure to go further and\u00a0base its investment plans on that scenario.<\/p>\n<p>Across the Atlantic,\u00a0it is the turn of ExxonMobil and Chevron\u00a0on Wednesday. They are taking a more defensive stance, opposing shareholder resolutions to assess the implications of 2C for\u00a0their portfolios and appoint climate experts to their boards.<\/p>\n<p>Total&#8217;s strategy won praise from\u00a0Helen Wildsmith, stewardship director at charity specialist CCLA and founder of the Aiming for A investor coalition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we\u2019ve seen evidence of good strategic analysis of the low-carbon transition by both Total and Shell\u2019s boards at their AGMs, following intensive engagement by Aiming for A members and other investors in recent years,&#8221; she said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tomorrow institutional investors have an important opportunity to signal to Exxon and Chevron that portfolio resilience is key to maintaining shareholder value following the Paris Agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To stand half a chance of holding global temperature rise below 2C, scientists estimate a third of proven oil reserves and half of natural gas is
