{"id":30011,"date":"2016-05-23T09:04:14","date_gmt":"2016-05-23T08:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/?p=30011"},"modified":"2016-05-23T10:13:51","modified_gmt":"2016-05-23T09:13:51","slug":"antarctic-melt-could-add-3-metres-to-sea-levels-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/05\/23\/antarctic-melt-could-add-3-metres-to-sea-levels-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Antarctic glacier melt could add 3 metres to sea levels &#8211; study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">One of Antarctica\u2019s great glaciers could become unstable if global warming continues at the present pace. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As warm seas wash the ice shelf, the land-based mass of ice could begin to retreat, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/emb_releases\/2016-05\/icl-spe051716.php\" target=\"_blank\">cross a critical threshold in the present century<\/a>\u00a0and then withdraw 300 kilometres inland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the course of doing so it would spill tremendous quantities of water into the oceans: enough to raise global sea levels by 2.9 metres and threaten cities that are home to billions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And here is the bad news: glaciologists have known for decades that West Antarctica\u2019s ice sheets are unstable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But the Totten glacier is part of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, a mass of ice most researchers had believed to be stable and highly unlikely to lose much of its ice, even in a warming world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Scientists from Australia, New Zealand, the US and Britain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v533\/n7603\/full\/nature17447.html\" target=\"_blank\">report in Nature<\/a>\u00a0that they explored the underlying geology of the Totten glacier to build up a picture of its advance and retreat over many millions of years.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2015\/05\/19\/giant-antarctic-ice-shelf-could-collapse-by-end-of-century\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Report:<\/strong>\u00a0Giant Antarctic ice shelf could collapse by end of century<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe evidence coming together is painting a picture of East Antarctica being much more vulnerable to a warming environment than we thought,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/m.siegert\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Siegert<\/a>,\u00a0co-director of the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London. \u201cThis is something we should worry about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTotten Glacier is losing ice now, and the warm ocean water that is causing this loss has the potential to also push the glacier back to an unstable place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The identification of a weak spot in the bastion of frozen water that embraces East Antarctica is new. But alarm about the rate of melting and the potential for change across the world\u2019s last largely uninhabited continent is not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the past few years researchers have pinpointed <a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/deep-concern-over-invisible-threat-to-antarctic-glaciers\/\" target=\"_blank\">the insidious effect \u00a0of warming sea currents<\/a>, and identified <a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/no-way-back-for-west-antarctic-glaciers\/\" target=\"_blank\">immediate hazards<\/a>\u00a0to the glaciers of the fast-warming West Antarctic region.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>\u201cTotten Glacier is only one outlet for the ice of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, but it could have a huge impact\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They have, in separate studies, warned that climatologists may have <a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/antarctic-may-melt-far-faster-than-thought\/\" target=\"_blank\">under-estimated the pace of change<\/a>\u00a0and even proposed scenarios in which <a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/unlimited-emissions-would-result-in-ice-free-antarctica\/\" target=\"_blank\">the loss of ice over the whole continent<\/a> could become inexorable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But nobody expected any of these things to happen, or even begin to happen, in a human lifespan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even in a rapidly-warming world, Antarctica will remain the coldest place on Earth, <a href=\"https:\/\/nsidc.org\/cryosphere\/quickfacts\/icesheets.html\" target=\"_blank\">sheathed by 30 million cubic kilometres of ice<\/a>, containing 70% of the planet\u2019s fresh water, a mass so vast that \u2013 were it to melt entirely \u2013 sea levels would rise by 60 metres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The latest study suggests that rapid melting could begin within the next century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTotten Glacier is only one outlet for the ice of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, but it could have a huge impact,\u201d said Professor Siegert. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe East Antarctic Ice Sheet is by far the largest mass of ice on earth, so any small changes could have a big influence globally.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>This article was produced by the<\/em>\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Climate News Network<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A huge glacier in the frozen wastes of East Antarctica, a region previously thought stable, could melt much faster than expected, scientists say.","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":30012,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[830,159],"tags":[28,2396],"coauthors":[],"class_list":["post-30011","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-antarctic","category-climate-science","tag-sea-level-rise","tag-sea-levels","type-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.3 -
