Some experts foresee a wave of litigation against the fossil fuel sector similar to that faced by tobacco firms.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-partner=\"tweetdeck\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We can no longer afford to respond to climate change with denials or obstruction: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7JBCS2fhHk\">https:\/\/t.co\/7JBCS2fhHk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ActOnClimate?src=hash\">#ActOnClimate<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Eric Schneiderman (@AGSchneiderman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AGSchneiderman\/status\/661982759074820097\">November 4, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It follows a series of articles by <a href=\"http:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/content\/Exxon-The-Road-Not-Taken\" target=\"_blank\">Inside Climate News<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/graphics.latimes.com\/exxon-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Times<\/a> showing Exxon distorted the climate debate for decades.<\/p>\n<p>While internal modelling in 1982 confirmed the scientific consensus that fossil fuel use causes global warming, the company\u2019s lobbyists sowed doubt on the findings.<\/p>\n<p>The effects are still evident in US discourse today, which has become deeply polarised.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This very expensive GLOBAL WARMING bullshit has got to stop. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/418542137899491328\">January 2, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Most Republican presidential candidates continue to dispute human influence on the climate. Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, on the other hand, back an investigation into Exxon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of evidence they misled,\u201d Clinton <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2015\/10\/29\/3717602\/clinton-investigate-exxon\/\" target=\"_blank\">told reporters last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders went further, <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2015\/10\/20\/3714390\/bernie-sanders-investigate-exxon-climate-denial\/\" target=\"_blank\">writing to US attorney general Loretta Lynch<\/a> to ask for a federal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears that Exxon knew its product was causing harm to the public, and spent millions of dollars to obfuscate the facts,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>As well as affecting America\u2019s willingness to cut greenhouse gas emissions, Exxon\u2019s behaviour had financial implications.<\/p>\n<p>By playing down the climate threat, it may have given shareholders a false impression of the company\u2019s future profitability.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2015\/07\/08\/around-the-world-in-5-climate-change-lawsuits\/\" investigation by the New York attorney general\u2019s office for two years over its financial disclosures.<\/p>\n<p>Bank of England governor Mark Carney last month <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2015\/09\/30\/carney-urges-g20-to-tackle-financial-risks-of-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">warned<\/a> climate-related litigation posed a threat to financial stability.<\/p>\n<p>Pressure on polluters or negligent companies to pay out \u201cwill only increase as the science and evidence of climate change hardens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2015\/06\/24\/climate-campaigners-win-court-case-against-dutch-government\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Netherlands<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2015\/09\/20\/pakistan-ordered-to-enforce-climate-law-by-lahore-court\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pakistan<\/a> have won legal challenges forcing their governments
