Built just over a decade ago, it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greendesignetc.net\/Buildings_09\/Building_Shen_Yuming_paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">supposed<\/a> to use half the energy of a traditional skyscraper, but the reality was different. Tenants eschewed the natural ventilation on offer, preferring energy-hungry air conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>Or how about the Taj Mahal? Most of the world\u2019s new buildings in the coming decades will crop up in Asia. There more than anywhere low carbon pioneers need to get the message across.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt depends what story you want to communicate,\u201d says Alistair Guthrie, of engineering consultancy Arup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Taj Mahal is a great story but it doesn\u2019t use much energy at all, so from an energy efficiency point of view it is not the best example.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21334\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21334\" class=\"size-large wp-image-21334\" alt=\"Choked in smog, could the Taj Mahal become a low carbon beacon? (Pic: Jaymis Loveday\/Flickr)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Guthrie favours a more down-to-earth approach: \u201cForget buildings that look like Willy Wonka\u2019s chocolate factory. A quarter of the budget is reserved for low income communities, says Mary Nichols, head of the California Air Resources Board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of small businesses involved in this is amazing,\u201d she says. \u201cThis is a way to get to grassroots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is general agreement that to succeed, a drive for zero carbon buildings must be about more than emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about energy security, it\u2019s about less reliance on imports, it\u2019s about more money in people\u2019s pockets,\u201d says Arup\u2019s Guthrie.<\/p>\n<p>Public communications aside, the building sector itself is \u201cnot very innovative,\u201d Eveillard says.<\/p>\n<p>Those in the room may be keen to do more, but the wider industry is slow to adopt green materials and technology.<\/p>\n<p>Sandrine Dixson-Decleve, director of the Prince of Wales Corporate Leaders Group and co-host of the discussion with Track0, urges advocates to face up to the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf everyone says energy efficiency is the low hanging fruit, why the hell haven\u2019t we got where we wanted to?\u201d she asks. \u201cWe have to rally ourselves behind a narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"ANALYSIS: Notre Dame or a Durban township?
