{"id":16281,"date":"2014-04-02T13:28:28","date_gmt":"2014-04-02T13:28:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rtcc.org\/?p=16281"},"modified":"2014-04-02T14:48:47","modified_gmt":"2014-04-02T14:48:47","slug":"kill-the-cheeseburgers-to-stop-global-warming-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2014\/04\/02\/kill-the-cheeseburgers-to-stop-global-warming-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Kill the cheeseburgers to stop global warming &#8211; report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>Scientists say public must stop eating so much meat and dairy produce, citing rising levels of carbon pollution from industry<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16314\" style=\"width: 476px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16314\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16314\" alt=\"(Pic: Ian Mannion\/Flickr)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2014\/04\/Cow_466.jpg\" width=\"466\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2014\/04\/Cow_466.jpg 466w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2014\/04\/Cow_466-106x63.jpg 106w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2014\/04\/Cow_466-276x163.jpg 276w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Pic: Ian Mannion\/Flickr)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>By <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rtcc_edking\" target=\"_blank\">Ed King<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you want to save the world from catastrophic climate change?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One thing you can do, right now, is stop eating meat and dairy products.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a conclusion from scientists in a paper published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/earth+sciences+and+geography\/atmospheric+sciences\/journal\/10584\" target=\"_blank\">Climatic Change journal<\/a>, which assesses the growth of greenhouse gas emissions from the farming sector.<\/p>\n<p>They say nitrous oxide from fields and methane from livestock are projected to rise from 7.1 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) in 2000 to 13GTCO2e in 2070.<\/p>\n<p>This would make limiting warming to a maximum of 2C, as agreed by governments in 2009, impossible to achieve, say the scientists.<\/p>\n<p>They believe changing what we eat and drink is essential:\u00a0\u201cOnly by also assuming reduced meat and dairy consumption do we find agricultural emission levels that do not take more than half of the total emissions space in 2070.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We therefore conclude that dietary changes are crucial for meeting the 2C target with high probability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the UN\u2019s Food and Agriculture Organisation, as countries develop the average protein intake per citizen increases, as does meat consumption.<\/p>\n<p>This poses a growing problem, as portions of food from methane-generating animals such as cows and sheep have far higher carbon footprints than other foods.<\/p>\n<p>A 2011 study from the <a href=\"http:\/\/static.ewg.org\/reports\/2011\/meateaters\/pdf\/report_ewg_meat_eaters_guide_to_health_and_climate_2011.pdf\">US-based Environmental Working Group<\/a> calculated lamb generates 39.3 kg of CO2e per kilo, while beef comes in at 27.1kg CO2e per kilo.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s 13 times more than vegetable proteins such as beans, lentils and tofu.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16320\" style=\"width: 476px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16320\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16320\" alt=\"Dairy and meat farming in Latin America is far more carbon intensive than other regions (Pic: CC)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2014\/04\/Dairy_meat_466.jpg\" width=\"466\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2014\/04\/Dairy_meat_466.jpg 466w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2014\/04\/Dairy_meat_466-69x63.jpg 69w, https:\/\/cdn.climatechangenews.com\/files\/2014\/04\/Dairy_meat_466-180x163.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dairy and meat farming in Latin America is far more carbon intensive than other regions (Pic: Climatic Change)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Speaking to RTCC, Fredrik Hedenus, one of the study authors, admitted their findings were \u201ccontroversial\u201d and said it would likely \u201ctake a long time\u201d to change the average diet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We should already be thinking about how we can make our food more climate friendly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that total emissions from eating meat and dairy products could be much higher, since land use change and the carbon footprint from animal-feed were not included in his calculations.<\/p>\n<p>Water use is another factor not factored in. One kilo of beef is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/datablog\/2013\/jan\/10\/how-much-water-food-production-waste\">estimated<\/a> to have a \u2018water footprint\u2019 of 15,415 litres, just ahead of sheep (10,412) but behind chocolate (17,196).<\/p>\n<p>The study also illustrates the need for farmers in the developing world to learn more efficient rearing and production techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Latin American emissions per kilo of milk or meat are on average five times those of Europe \u2013 especially significant since Brazil is the world\u2019s largest beef exporter.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dairyco.org.uk\/resources-library\/research-development\/environment\/dairy-roadmap-2013\/#.UzvrKVLjjxM\">UK dairy farmers have committed to a 20\u201330% reduction<\/a> of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide emissions by 2020 based on 1990 levels.<\/p>\n<p>Ceris Jones, climate change adviser at the UK National Farmer&#8217;s Union, told RTCC farmers are taking further steps to address their environmental impacts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The NFU is concerned about climate change projections not just for their possible domestic but also their international effect because farming is on the frontline of climate change impacts,&#8221;
